Chapter 15

Luxembourg

The floor rattled as Harry woke with a start, thrashing in his seat and sitting bolt upright. He blinked once before he remembered. Luxembourg. I’m in a plane. The passenger beside him was leaning as far away as possible. Harry cleared his throat. “Sorry,” he said. “Don’t like landings.”

Once the plane had taxied to the gate, Harry bolted off with his single bag in tow and headed directly for the car rental counters to secure the most German car they had. Chilly morning air sweeping south from the North Sea washed the last vestiges of sleep away, helped by a steaming cup of strong coffee. It took him a few tries, but he finally found the correct Volkswagen sedan, hidden in a long row of nearly identical vehicles.

The car hummed as he made the crossing from Luxembourg into Germany in under twenty minutes. Dom Grilli was following the same path en route from Brooklyn, though Harry didn’t expect him until much later in the day. By then he hoped to confirm that Geoffrey of Monmouth’s clues did point to Trier, Germany. He knew where to look. Trier Cathedral, the oldest church in Germany, built during Diocletian’s reign in honor of several Roman gods, including Bacchus.

Uncovering the secret headrest in Weniver’s tomb had confirmed Geoffrey had indeed come this far and left a marker for Theobald. But his servant had never found it. Harry had. Now to find the cone in Trier Cathedral. Would it lead to a mythical sword? Geoffrey had thought so, though how it tied to Lucius Artorius Castus was a mystery. Harry would worry about that after locating a marker he could recognize as a cone in a building that had been under construction for over a thousand years – including expansions, renovations and demolition.

Snow-capped mountains marked the horizon as Harry accelerated around slower traffic. He bit his lip. Stop worrying. Whatever waited, he’d handle it, just like his father had taught him. Fred had never doubted himself, not ever.

Harry touched the amulet around his neck. Don’t worry, Dad. I got this. First step, find the cone. A pinecone, if his hunch proved correct. Many Roman religious structures had been dedicated to more than one god, in part because Rome had allowed conquered peoples to continue worshipping their traditional gods as long as they also paid homage to Roman gods. It was tactically brilliant, giving new subjects a chance to maintain a shred of dignity through the impression of continued normalcy despite having just been defeated by the Romans.

Roman gods were often thinly veiled adaptations of Greek gods. Why? It made things easier. Steal a fully formed god, slap a different name on it, and voila, a new Roman god. The Greek god Dionysus had become Rome’s Bacchus, from his love of wine and song down to the staff he carried. A staff topped with a pinecone. Geoffrey’s reference to the Gallic church of Dionysus was even more clear to Harry. Prior to their defeat by Rome, Gaul had been a land of Celtic tribes situated in modern-day Germany.
